We will learn about how to know your target audience for marketing using surveys and how to create a customer avatar to provide an engaging and personalized content for your target audience. We will be looig into it by asking just three simple questions. Let’s dive into it.

1. What is marketing ?

Marketing is all about understanding your customer, building and maintaining the relationship with your customer. It is about building trust by having good conversation with people.

Following are some of the tips for building mass trust :

  • Good Conversation: You should treat your customers as your friends, communicate with them as you are communicating with your friend so that they feel the connection and build trust in you.
  • Be good at 1:1 conversation: If you can communicate and convince people to trust you by talking to them 1 on 1, then you can convince your audience to trust you.
  • Be Authentic: Being authentic means that you act in a way that shows your true self and how you feel. Rather than showing people only a particular side of yourself, you have to accept yourself as who you are and not show off unnecessarily.
  • Don’t put on a mask of someone you are not, be genuine.
  • People are tired of fake people with social personas, so don’t try to be someone else. Everyone is attracted towards someone real, people connect to people who are similar to them rather than someone who don’t match their lifestyle or personality.

2. Who is a better marketer ?

People with more life experiences are better marketers. People who manage the relationships with their customers are better marketers. People who find innovative ideas to solve problems and manage relationships are better marketers.

For example, who do you think would make a good engineer ? Definitely someone with more experience in the field of engineering who has gone through so many challenges and have adapted to the conditions to overcome that challenges, learned new things in the process, etc.

Here are some of the qualities of a better marketer:

  • Be Innovative: Successful marketers always try out new things, they are not afraid of new ideas and methods. There should be nothing more interesting for a marketer than trying out new ideas and discovering new results.
  • Eternal learners: All marketers should be dedicating their large portion of the time in learning and developing their career. They should always try to perfect their skills or add new ones to their arsenal.
  • Adaptability: The world of marketing is constantly evolving, which is why we should be ready to react and adapt quickly to changing market conditions.
  • Challenge our beliefs: If we have strong beliefs about something we should always try to go and read more about it it’s pros, cons and challenge our beliefs so that we are more comfortable to confront someone against our beliefs or change them if otherwise.

3. How to define your target audience ?

There is a famous saying in digital marketing that,

“If you try to sell to everyone, then you will end up selling to no one”

Consider for an instance, if you are in a crowded place like bus stand or railway station and you are shouting out loud “Listen everyone” then no one I mean no one will be interested in you. Instead if you shout out specifically “Hello is there any doctor or engineer” then you are definitely in for some response. This purely indicates why you need to target specific set of audience.

Targeted marketing allows you to focus your message on the right market and the people who are most likely to buy from you. In the modern world we are constantly bombarded by lots of information. If you are not targeting or speaking to a specific type of people, then it is most likely that your message is goanna end up in the vast ocean of unwanted information.

Who is your Audience ?

Creating A Customer Avatar

Knowing who is your audience and who you are targeting is critical when starting the marketing process. Most of the things you will do will have an audience, which will simply be a particular person or a group of people. Your audience should influence your decisions about content, emphasis, style, and tone.

  • Create a customer avatar: To know your audience, create a customer avatar through a survey, and then focus on the centre and not on the edges. Find new topics to write or create content related to that topics.
  • Break the awkwardness: There is a saying that “Awkwardness is an indicator of learning”, so try out new paths as per the customer demand. Break the awkwardness and start enjoying the job.

Here are some of the important pointers to take note while communicating with your target audience:

  • Write to a single customer at a time: It means that whenever you are communicating with your audience, try to think and write as if you are writing to a single person or your friend, so that you gain the trust of your customer and you can always send the similar message to thousands of people having similar problems.
  • Connect with your customers 1 on 1: Though you may have a large audience, everyone is alone with their device. So try to communicate 1 on 1 by calling them or by sending email to know their problems and requests so as to give them better content.
  • Join mental conversations: What I mean by that is join the conversation people are having in their minds. Understand their queries, problems and find solutions to them.
  • Connect through Emails and Messages: Try to connect with people through the emails and messaging so that they feel the personal touch and they trust us.
  • Write a gripping blog: The blog should be engaging right from the start through every sentence until the end. The customer shouldn’t feel like leaving the blog without completely reading it. They should feel connected to the blog.

Connecting with your ideal customers:

To find my ideal customers in order to create content for travelers, I conducted a survey with the help of google forms. Asking people some simple question about themselves which would answer my questions about who are the ideal customers for my business.

This survey gave me some specific answers about who are my ideal customers like what is their age, their gender, their profession and many other things so that I can target specific audience who are interested in my content. This is the way how I created a customer avatar, gaining all the details of my ideal customer.

Here are couple of people from my survey who can be my audience:

Here are some of the things I found out from communicating with them.

Customer 1 — Rajiv Salunkhe :

  • He is a student by profession.
  • He is from Maharastra, India.
  • He is in the age group of 23 years old
  • He is a photographer by passion, which is why he likes backpacking and adventure type travelling.
  • He likes to go out with friends, which is also the reason why he doesn’t get to travel.

Customer 2 — Saurabh Jadhav:

  • He is also a student.
  • He is also from Maharashtra, India
  • He is also 23 years old.
  • He likes to get out in winters and chill out.
  • The reason he cannot travel is due to income issues.

So from this info I will be concentrating on the people who are young and just starting out their career and love to travel for adventures or chilling out and having the time of their life. I will be concentrating on their problems and creating content so that they can travel care free.
